Expanding Urban Tree Canopy Through Environmental Data and Community Planning

The Context 

Urban tree canopy can reduce exposure to extreme heat and improve neighborhood environmental conditions. The City of Charlotte’s street tree initiative connects canopy expansion with community priorities and practical site conditions.

KEC’s Contribution 

KEC supported neighborhood engagement, GIS-informed planning, and the assessment of planting feasibility. The project brought resident input together with environmental and location-specific information to help identify opportunities for street tree investment.
