Community Engagement Specialist

Position Overview

The Community Engagement Specialist will support the delivery of inclusive, multi-jurisdictional public engagement activities. This role focuses on in-person engagement, logistics coordination, stakeholder interaction, and accessible communication, ensuring that residents can meaningfully participate in public processes.

The position is ideal for someone skilled in community outreach, event coordination, direct public interaction, and working with diverse populations, including individuals with limited English proficiency and underserved or historically marginalized communities. This is a part-time position with the option to become full-time based on performance and availability of funding.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Serve as an in-person staff member for public outreach events. 

  • Assist with meeting logistics: room setup, sign-in tables, materials, technology. 

  • Facilitate conversations with residents about community issues and concerns. 

  • Document feedback, questions, and demographic participation. 

  • Assist with multilingual or accessibility accommodations. 

  • Assist with preparing posters, handouts, and interactive boards. 

  • Organize print materials, event kits, and equipment for field deployment. 

  • Coordinate distribution of materials across the Charlotte region. 

  • Collect feedback from participants and input data into tracking systems. 

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with community groups, nonprofits, advocacy organizations, schools, and local partners. 

  • Support outreach to underserved communities. 

  • Help identify trusted community venues and organizations for hosting events. 

 

Requirements 

  • Experience in community outreach, public engagement, communications, social services, public health, or related fields. 

  • Strong interpersonal communication abilities and comfort engaging with the public. 

  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse communities, including underserved neighborhoods and Limited English Proficiency populations. 

  • Ability to travel throughout the Charlotte region. 

  • Ability to lift and set up event materials (easels, tables, boxes of print materials). 

  • Strong cultural competency and commitment to inclusive, equitable engagement practices. 

  • Comfortable working evenings and weekends as needed for events.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting government, transportation, public health, safety, or urban planning initiatives. 

  • Experience with community engagement in rural communities or areas of persistent poverty. 

  • Experience with multilingual audiences or previous work in Title VI/ADA-compliant engagement. 

  • Prior work with community-based organizations in the Charlotte region.

Workload & Compensation

  • Hours vary depending on event schedule; evening/weekend availability required. 

  • Travel reimbursement for project-related field activities. 

  • Hourly rate to-be-determined based on experience.
